maybe ally...sees "SUFFS”.
Do I start with one of the greatest songs ice ever heard in “G.A.B.”? Or do I start with the powerhouse that is Shaina Taub? Do I talk about Nikki M. James who steals the show as Ida B. Wells? I genuinely don't know where to begin because all of it was wonderful, meaningful, heartbreaking & timely.
💜 | SUFFS focuses primarily on the historical events that led to the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1920. This amendment gave some women (primarily white let's not overlook that - it is a primary storyline do not fear!) the right to vote. I loved getting to meet the people behind this massive achievement through this fantastic company. Inez Milholland! Doris Stevens! Lucy Burns! Ruza Wenclawska (Rose Winslow to you I assume). These are names embedded in our history. These are names that are important to know.
As this story unfolds we are given insights into how women of color dealt with being ostracized during this time, during this fight. How in essence they were told to wait their turn. The mistakes in those decisions are acknowledged and the fact that we still struggle is as well. Make no mistake Shaina made it a point to ensure this musical touched on all facets of this movement.
💜 | It’s important to remember and learn from history or else we are doomed to repeat it. I say this show is timely because it is a reminder that women still fight for what should be the norm. That our rights are being taken away. That we can't sit back and watch it happen. We've come too far as this musical clearly shows us. We Keep Marching. We keep fighting. We don’t back down.
If you get the chance to see this musical please do. There's a reason it's been nominated for six Tonys including Best Musical. It's that special.
P.S. See it with girlfriends. 💜
