maybe ally...sees "Stereophonic”.
I start with a few questions. What are you willing to do for greatness? Are you willing to destroy yourself and others to create an epochal piece of art? Could one handle the toll artistic creation can bring?
This is a play that has music in it. In this play are seven people who almost destroy themselves for artistic greatness.
🎶 | Stereophonic is a love letter to bands & sound engineers everywhere and the process of creating an album. This is a band who’s made it big. People lucky enough to know that feeling also know the pressure that comes with it and in this story — that pressure results in arguing, jealousy within the band, anxiety, you name it.
This was a slow burn. Your attention is grabbed immediately by the cast. We are tossed right into the mess of it all with these imperfect people with all the facets a ’70s band would have from drug use & drinking to disagreements it all seems so small. It's so common until it isn't. Until we get deeper into recording sessions. Until all the secrets, heartache & despair appear. You wonder if there will be a band left at the end.
🎸 | The play comes alive when we get the music. My goodness, the music! Composed for the play by one of my favorite people Will Butler whom you may know from Arcade Fire. I can't wait for the original cast album (May 10th). The music is magic. It's addicting. The cast brings it all to life and yes it's really them performing the music! Listen to “Masquerade” trust me (it's playing as you read this).
If you've got time and want to see some exceptional theater please see Stereophonic. It really is one of the best plays I've ever seen and deserving of those 13 Tony noms. Every single one earned. Especially by that cast. I'd be here for hours talking about each one of them. So let's stop here. Just go. 🤘🏽🎸✨
