maybe ally...sees “Sunset Boulevard”.
So. Because of recent events… I will only speak on the moment in time when I saw the show — which was about two weeks ago now and keep it at that. This is me talking about the most exceptional show I've seen in a long time — maybe ever?
Sunset Boulevard follows film actress Norma Desmond's steady descent into madness while simultaneously following Joe Gillis and his desire to escape Norma while also making a name for himself in Hollywood. There's much more there but why spoil it?
Thanks to Jamie Lloyd's direction a familiar story is told in a jarring, new & creative way. The show is stripped of anything very flashy (I don't consider the screen or camera use flashy). So you are left with a technological marvel & performances by Everyone in the company that'll leave you breathless at times. Don't even get me started on the Act 2 opening. You've seen all the videos. What a challenge and achievement for those running the show day to day. My jaw was on the floor. Tom Francis, you star—my god. Nicole Scherzinger is exceptional in the role. She has the kind of vocals that silenced everyone on the day I saw the show. She got a 4-minute standing ovation during the show.
It was a visual feast for the eyes at the same time. Everything is uniform, and everything is monochrome in a sense. I loved it. It felt as if I were watching a film come to life before my eyes. It was beautifully done. It was so stripped down that you are forced to focus on the details in the performances—how it should be, I say.
It truly is one of the best shows I've ever seen. Congratulations to Jamie Lloyd & the company on being so creative and open and free with this piece.
If this is the future of broadway I’m all in.
