maybe ally...sees “Romeo + Juliet”.

The kids are gonna be alright. That’s literally what I said as I put on my coat and walked out after this fantastic show finished. I am 37 years old, and watching the incredible artists of tomorrow up on that stage made me feel something profound. How lucky am I that I was raised in an environment that encouraged openness to what younger people are expressing so vividly? I can fondly remember being that younger person once, full of longing for understanding, love, and community. In this production, I got all three in abundance.

This production manages to keep Shakespeare’s original text intact while making some fantastic, bold choices in casting, set design, and music (Jack Antonoff, you clever man!). When I walked into the theater, it felt like stepping into a vibrant club Gen Z, with music blaring and adorable teddy bears everywhere. From the moment you enter the venue, you realize this isn’t your mother’s Romeo + Juliet. Kit Connor and Rachel Zegler have remarkable chemistry that draws you in. I can't stress enough how much our leads need to convince us that a love this profound can blossom so quickly. They do it effortlessly, and it’s captivating to witness.

What could I possibly say about Gabby Beans that hasn’t already been said by others? I think I fell in love with her the very day I first saw the show. Watching her effortlessly take on multiple roles, including the iconic Mercutio, left me in complete awe. It was such a joy to have her inform us when her roles changed, and the depth she brought to each character, big or small, was nothing short of enchanting. I was equally impressed by Tommy Dorfman! What a beautifully dynamic way to portray Tybalt. I adored it.

I could go on and on about how exhilarating this play was. The tagline might be “The youth are fucked,” and while it’s true that these youths face significant challenges, as a whole, these talented young adults are putting on quite the show. Sam Gold directed a truly moving piece of art, and you have until February 16th, 2025, to witness this beautiful, heartbreaking version of a timeless classic.
